Careers

We have two exciting opportunities coming up at the Mewes on the coast, as we continue to grow our new clinics, one for a vet, one for a nurse. See below for details.

Veterinary surgeon for independent vet clinic in Rottingdean, Brighton Location

Pay: £51,000.00-£68,000.00 per year

Job Description:

Do you want to enjoy being a great GP vet, in a practice where you can stroll down to the beach during your lunch break (which we insist you take), with no out-of-hours work?

We are growing fast, and need a true generalist vet, who thrives on creating lasting bonds with both patients and clients.

You would take sole charge of our village vet clinic in Rottingdean, and continue maintaining its great reputation for customer service and kind veterinary care, with a nice balance of consultations and a small number of operations every day.

We are looking for a vet with 2-3 years experience to join our existing team. We can accommodate a colleague who needs either full-time or part-time hours. We do insist that everyone in our team does at least one evening clinic per week (but only until 6:30pm) and just 1:3 Saturday mornings (until 12.30pm).

There are no out-of-hours as this will be outsourced to another clinic 20 minutes away. If we run late, which is unusual, any overtime is paid – you are not expected to work overtime for free. You will be encouraged to develop and maintain a good work-life balance, and overtime is not the norm here.

We are offering:

  • a full time salary of £51,000 to £68,000, before overtime and bonuses, depending on your level of experience and any further qualifications. Pro-rate for part-time.
  • five weeks’ holiday plus bank holidays.
  • a £2,000 annual CPD allowance for full-time vets and pro-rata for part-time vets, with study towards an appropriate certificate supported and funded, if that’s where your heart lies.
  • professional fees paid for.

We need a vet colleague looking to settle down and enjoy building close bonds with their clients and patients. This is a GP position to be based on the coast (not in Haywards Heath), for first opinion work for cats, dogs and small furries, so we need someone interested in excellent communication whilst consulting, and confidence with all routine and non routine surgical and dental procedures.

We have one consulting room in Rottingdean, with its operating theatre and small hospital.

We have digital radiography, including digital dental radiography, an ultrasound scanner, in house laboratory, including Vetscan Imagyst and microscopy, operating lights, dental drill, height adjustable tables, oxygen generators and air conditioning.

Your day off would be Thursday. With you, there are two other part-time vets, 2 RVNs, and a team of receptionists. As one of a very few in independent vets left in Brighton, we are establishing an excellent reputation and building our client list all the time.

The Mewes Vets opened in Haywards Heath in 1996 (we celebrated our 30th anniversary this month!) and has built into a multi award-winning, RCVS-accredited practice, with a reputation for being a great place to work, thanks to Julia’s commitment to caring for her team as well as her patients.

Many of our team members are extremely long-standing. We encourage everyone to be the best they can be, and to follow their own dreams and goals, while enjoying the autonomy to make the best decision for each patient without the need to worry about targets.

We were crowned the first ever Best Vets in West Sussex in 2021, and in the top 25 in the UK in 2019, 2020 and 2023, and shortlisted in 2024 & 2025. This could be down to our “one pet, one vet” policy – meaning every time a client visits, they’ll see a familiar face, ensuring continuity of care for patients and allowing us to build strong bonds with both them and their owners, while also helping to make the practice a lovely place to work in.
