How a rainy day activity helped shape our future

When I was a kid we had a summer holiday every year in the same town in Devon.

For just two weeks we had sand, sea and rock pools.

Some years I got terribly sunburnt, but one year it just would not stop raining. We were all
going stir crazy, confined to a small house, getting on each other’s nerves.
Eventually my parents asked us what we would like to do?

I was seven, my brother a little older, my sister only five. We went into a huddle, and after a
little discussion we announced that we would all like a riding lesson.

At this point, none of us had even stroked a pony, let alone sat on one. My parents loved to
watch the racing on TV, but otherwise I have no idea where this ambition came from. But it is
something you can do whilst it rains, so my parents stretched the budget, and booked our
first ever riding lesson.

It was utterly brilliant. My father insisted on trying it out too, and looked ridiculous on a
massive horse beside our tiny mounts. He never rode again, but the three of us were
hooked.

As a result, we developed such a passion for horses that my brother has spent his whole life
in the racing industry, and I have spent mine in the veterinary profession. Not bad for one
rainy day in Devon.

Back to 2020, and it’s a great week this week. At last we are all being permitted to do a little
more since complete lockdown.

At the Mewes we are starting the process of safely catching up with procedures and
vaccines that had to be postponed due to COVID-19. We have our team and our risk
assessments in place, and we are no longer being forced to turn any animal that needs us
away.

If you have been waiting patiently for this: thank you! You can now call to book your safely
socially distanced veterinary appointment on 01444 456886.
