It’s time for possibly the best fun dog show of the year, and I would love you to join us.
The Cuckoo Fayre has the best atmosphere of all the local events I attend. There is something friendly about the people and their pets that always makes for a really great event. There are plenty of interesting things to do between classes, including listening to the live music whilst enjoying a glass of beer, riding the miniature steam train, or watching the Punch and Judy show.
It is always well organised, and the dog show gets the privilege of bringing the judging of Best in Show into the main arena as the highlight closing event of the day.
When I first started judging a fun family dog show I used to get really nervous. But now I consider it a privilege to meet those much-loved pets.
People sometimes ask me how I decide who gets the red rosette. It is often something really subtle, just a dog that catches my eye at the particular moment I look, something sparkly or gleeful in their face, perhaps. For Child’s Best Friend I am looking for the child to be aware of their companion, and making sure that the dog is comfortable in the ring with all the crowds around, and knows how to walk on the lead, paying attention to each other.
My favourite class is the Fancy Dress. I am hoping to see pets that are not uncomfortable in a slightly unusual situation. People who dress up too do get extra points from me, as do those who made their own outfits or do something really original.
This year the Cuckoo Fayre is next Bank Holiday Monday, 6th May 2019, on The Cuckfield Recreation Ground.
We will be taking entries from 12 noon, and judging will start immediately after the Mayor of Cuckfield’s speech at approximately 1pm. Each class costs just £2.00 to enter.
Hoping you can join us, with your fancy dress, of course! For more information, including a complete list of classes, go to themewesvets.co.uk/events
