Julia’s Weekly Column For The Middy

Is your pet the next Miss January or Mr October?

Two months ago I was at Chelwood Gate enjoying the splendid Summer Fun Day at the Cats Protection National Cat Rescue Centre.

It struck me that this is the only outdoors event of all those that The Mewes Vets attended in the last 12 months that is 100% focused on cats. For obvious reasons, we don’t often hold fun cat shows, cat racing, agility or herding events. In fact, it is a rare occasion when cat owners and cat lovers get together.

As we firmly believe that dog owners shouldn’t have all the fun, two years ago we launched our first ever photo competition for all pet owners, cats included, and it has been such a success that it has become an annual highlight.

This year we will be creating our 2017 calendar featuring all the best photographs that you send us of your pets. The calendars will be sold in aid of the splendid cat rescue and rehoming charity Paws and Claws. This small local charity founded in 1977 is based near Sayers Common, and has been nominated by our Trainee Nurse Lisa, who has volunteered there for years.

Paws and Claws is devoted to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming lost and abandoned cats; encouraging spaying & neutering to avoid unwanted kittens; helping with vets’ fees in cases of genuine hardship; and providing quarters for old and difficult-to-home cats. No cat is ever euthanized except on Veterinary advice. To read more, go to their website at pawsandclaws-ars.org.uk

But it takes lots of fundraising to provide this important service, so we would like you to help by taking lots of wonderful photos of your pets, and sending the very best ones in to our Pet Portrait competition. The overall winner will receive £100 worth of their choice of pet food, and the accolade of being our Calendar girl or boy for 2017. There will also be runners-up prizes for 11 other models – one for each month of the year.

It is free to enter and the deadline for entries is 1st November 2016. Photos should be emailed to enquiries@themewes.co.uk or posted on Facebook (www.facebook.com/TheMewesVets)

All species of pet welcome!
